The Ocrafolk School

Like the Ocrafolk Festival, the Ocrafolk School is a non-profit event housed under the Ocracoke Preservation Society. Occurring during the last week in October, the School invites participants to join week-long workshops in arts, crafts, cooking, music, local history and sailing in a relaxed island setting. The 5th annual Ocrafolk School is scheduled for October 23-28, 2011. 

The Slushy Stand

The Slushy Stand rents adult, kid and tandem bikes by the hour, day or week. If you are looking for tag-along bikes, bikes with trailers and bikes with baby seats, you are in the right place. It’s at the corner (curve!) of Route 12 (Irvin Garrish Highway) and Silver Lake Drive.

Tree Top Studio

Down a meandering sandy lane, Tree Top Studio features only the work of local artists. The gallery is filled with paintings in a variety of mediums. It is also a professional picture framing shop. Look for the big “Open” flag on Back Road.

Wheelie Fun Scooter and Gulf Cart Rentals

Enjoy the mobility and breezes generated by one of the colorful scooters available by the hour or day at the Anchorage Marina. Helmets are provided. For family enjoyment, rent one of their golf carts to cruise the village sites.

Windfall II Schooner

The 40’ schooner Windfall II offers a 1.5-hour sunset cruises daily, departing from the Community Square Dock and can also be chartered by the hour for up to six passengers. Sail through Teach’s Hole and hear the story of the pirate Blackbeard’s final battle from the captain who was featured in the History Channel’s 2-hour documentary True Caribbean Pirates. Take a turn at the helm or sit back and relax. Windfall II is also available for small weddings and sailing instruction. Reservations are required.

For those ready to learn to sail on their Ocracoke vacation, consider enrolling in the Windfall Sailing School. Capt. Rob claims that the floating classroom, a Sparkman & Stephens Rainbow 24’ Sloop, has been designed for the novice sailor. You can enroll in Basic Sailing; Basic Cruising and Coastwise Navigation all taught by an U.S.C.G.-licensed instructor certified by the American Sailing Association.

 

WOVV 90.1 FM Radio, Ocracoke Village Voice, One Island, Many Voices

If you have Ocracoke fever and need a little taste of the island, tune into the local radio station online. WOVV was founded in 2008 by a group of volunteers interested in forming a viable on-line and on-air community radio station. Turn on WOVV.org or 90.1FM to hear live local programming featuring music and entertainment, local news, weather, sports and coverage of local civic and business affairs. The programming is produced and presented by and for locals and visitors alike, broadcasting from the station’s studio on Silver Lake Harbor in the heart of Ocracoke Village.
